BAY CYCLES - NEWS UPDATE – OCT 21

As Bay Cycles starts a return to operating as normal, we can start focusing on the future and what is lined up for the 2022 model year.

Supply of bikes and parts has been – and still is  – challenging, so we’d like to thank you not only for your loyalty and business but also your patience and understanding over the lockdown periods.

We’re seeing some promising trends within cycling, both locally and countrywide. It seems that more people took to two wheels over the last 18 months and many have become hooked, remaining regular cyclists and encouraging their family and friends onto bikes.

The industry has been busy too – not just trying to keep products supplied – but refining designs and bringing new and exciting products to the marketplace. Read on (and click on the links) to learn more about new bikes, components, tech developments and brands…

Mountain Bike

Recently there’s been a noticeable trend towards riding off-road, whether it’s exploring local tracks, hitting trail centres such as Haldon Forest  or a road trip to Bike Park Wales. Getting away from traffic and hitting the dirt brings new challenges and give a welcome reboot if you’ve been pounding out the miles on tarmac – whether it’s weekend road rides or weekday commutes.

Trek has some exciting revisions to existing models and our website news features dig deep in to the details of the all-new 2022 Roscoe and the Marlin 8.  We also have an overview of MBUK magazine’s ‘Enduro bike of the year’, the Trek Slash.

ROAD

We’ve got a strong core of road riders here at Bay Cycles – both customers and staff – so any new developments in this area are keenly anticipated. A hotly speculated topic has been the next transmission updates for both Shimano’s top-tier Dura-Ace and the ever-popular Ultegra groupsets. After a long wait (and plenty of spy shots from the media), Shimano unveiled its all-new electronic 12 speed groupsets earlier in September. Read more in our tech feature HERE.

E-BIKES:

Another area that’s getting interest is the E-bike (electric assist) category. The brands we stock offer a wide range - whether it’s the gravity-focused e-MTBs such as the Trek Rail or those from UK brand Whyte, or more versatile leisure bikes such as the Trek Allant+ range or all-new Whyte E-506. Customers who have made the switch (or just added one to their fleet…) all have such enthusiasm for these bikes and the benefits they bring. Although stock availability is patchy at the moment, we are able to take orders and monitor delivery schedules but first it’s best to drop in and discuss what e-bike would suit your requirements. Our sales staff and mechanics have experience with most models, so we can talk you through the details.

A NEW BRAND AT BAY CYCLES – 100% MTB:

We’ve had great success with the road-focused range of eyewear from 100%, so it felt a natural move to bring the brand’s mountain bike gloves, goggles, full-face helmets and protection into stock. As a sponsor to the Trek Factory Racing team you may have seen 100% gloves and eyewear on the riders battling it out at the front of this summer’s XC races. We’ve been testing the products closer to home too – with trips to Bike Park Wales, the Forest of Dean and Haldon Forest – getting a feel for the fit and performance – so we can give you honest advice in store when you buy.

RACE TEAM ROUND UP

Red is definitely the colour with the Specter Wavcel Helmet

It’s been a busy if strange season so far for the MDCC Academy and Race Team riders. The regular training sessions at the Velopark has seen up to 40 riders and we have been representing the team well across a number of dispilines within the sport.

The Academy riders are currently dominating CX and MTB riding with successes in both sports, notably Eva Fox and Bayley Woodger scoring top results at the South West CX series. Our under 14 girls took the top honours in a recent 12 hour relay mountain bike event dominating and beating adult teams! The under 18’s all did well with 3 of the lads ranked in the top 6 in the country at time trialing in the National Best All Rounder rankings. They finished the season at the premier calendar Junior Tour of Wales, a 4 stage, 3 day race. It was tough race and a babtism of fire for the some of the riders who toughed it out to finish well in the middle of the placings – promising for next year as they are only first years at this level!  The teams red Specter Wavecel helmets were all highly visible in the peloton, making life easier for the team support to spot them amongst the 120 riders taking part.

Planning for 2022 is underway, with more national level riding for the team and international racing in the pipe line. A huge thanks are sent out to Bay Cycles, Trek and Bontrager for their fantastic support.
